Kenya Nyeri Gichatha-ini AB

Kenya Nyeri Gichatha-ini AB

Farm Description

Gichatha-ini is a factory, the site of a coffee mill, and is one third of the Gikanda Farmer's Cooperative Society. The other two factories are Kangocho and Ndaro-ini. The name Gikanda is made up of the three factory names: GIchathaini + KAngocho + NDAor-ini. They have been an outstanding cooperative for years, and we offered another great lot from them, in that case the AA from Kangocho factory. This coffee was not bought through the Kenya auction, but rather, in a direct deal with the cooperative that benefits them to a far greater extent. This is called the "second harvest" buying window. It means the price is a bit higher, but they always are from cooperatives like this, for whom many coffee roasters worldwide compete to obtain the best lots. It's also a really exquisite coffee!

This coffee is part of our Farm Gate pricing program.

Cupping Notes

This coffee does really well through a range of roast levels. Candied orange on the dry fragrance, with buttery caramel at Full City. Loads of citrus and floral in the warm cup, with caramel and graham finish at Full City as well as floral vanilla, but increasing cranberry brightness. The lighter roast has watermelon as well as sweet floral bergamot. As the cup cools, the finish of the Full City roast becomes much more syrupy with a rounded acidity that has a bit of red raspberry but still nice graham sweetness that balances it out. Such a sweet and exciting cup, bright bergamot floral with an effervescent body at City, syrupy berry and candied orange at Full City with caramel and graham finish.

Roast Recommendations

Showed very well at a range of roast levels, but City+ balances the best elements of each different level. As with most Kenyas, an extra day of rest results in a sweeter and more syrupy cup

Is there any way I can get a sample of this coffee? Maybe Sweet Marias will be carrying it soon and I can get a pound or two there?
