The dry fragrance is very complex, and releases layers of red fruits, delicate tea and floral notes, and sweetness of toasted marshmallow. Adding hot water to the grounds, the wet aroma struck me as particularly clean for dry process coffee, not showing a whole lot of the rustic characteristics associated with this type of processing. The fact that it had intense Guji florals helps push this notion, and the profile was also saturated with fruited sweetness of berries and stone fruits. City roasts are floral in the cup as well, which added a graceful side to the heavier fruit flavors. Perfumed lilac and tuberose notes are a highlight and up front. The fruits find solid footing as well, but never felt like they were competing with the more delicate aspects of the cup profile. At least not in light roasts. A flavor of ripe strawberry was delicious, and mingled with the floral bouquet nicely. As the coffee cools, the fruit flavors expanded quite a bit to include hints of fruit preserves, raspberry, juicy orange, and a pulpy fruit aspect as well that brought to mind slightly fermented fruit. My Full City roast was a little more rustic, though still delicious, with chocolate roast tones abound, ripe blackberry, and banana bread. All in all, a spectacular addition to our dry process offerings.

The Benti Nenka processing site is located in a village ("Kebele") of the same name within the Hambela Wamena region, Ethiopia's Guji Zone. It's a sister site to Hambela Dabaye, that you may be familiar with from previous years from which we also have a wet processed lot available right now. This is from the same station owner, Kedir Hassan, a proficient and capable engineer as well as coffee farmer. He's erected a few stations in Hambela Wamena region, some producing both washed and dry process ("naturals") coffees, though Benti Nenka only produces naturals. Of course he did not complete them on his own, and thanks to his long standing connection with the the people in this area, he had much needed community support on his side. Kedir splits bamboo reeds for constructing his drying beds, so they're flat and quite sturdy. You see a lot of chicken wire used at other sites, which tends to sag, creating uneven coffee layers. This lot is only made up of coffee from the small holders in the Benti Nenka area, whose farms span an altitude range of roughly 1900 to 2100 meters above sea level.
