Light roasts highlight the full range of flavors Karatu has to offer. A cinnamon sauce note is accented by tart fruits like green grape, peaches and cream, and pomegranate seeds, leading to a sweet-spiced finish. City to City+.
Karatu's dry fragrance offered a nice preamble to the cup. Fragrance of dark, semi-refined sugars were released from the ground coffee, along with notes of dark fruits that showed a juicy side, and complex baking spices. The wet aroma The wet aroma pulled out a very focused sweetness of unrefined sugars like demerara, and sucanat. I picked out hints of dried currants when breaking the crust, but it was really the sugary sweetness that was most prominent. Karatu is very sweet in the brew too, with tart fruits at City roast level that bring a nice bright impression to the cup. I noted a sweet flavor of cinnamon sauce made with brown sugar in both light roasts we tasted that led to a nice sweet-spiced finish. Tart fruits came through as the coffee cooled, like green grape, and a flavor profile of peaches and cream. Darker fruit notes offered an appealing 'juicy' quality, tangy and vibrant, like pomegranate seeds. I tried Karatu at Full City as well, and found the cup flavors to be a little flat, and dark. Best to stick to a tight City-City+ to bring out the full range of flavors.
Karatu Coffee Factory is located near Gatundu town in Kenya's Thika District, Central Province. It was established in 1965, and membership is currently held in the nearby villages of Karatu, Gitwe, Kibiru and Kigaa Villages. Karatu is a "factory", in Kenyan terms, basically a cooperative wet mill that buys and sells the coffee of members. Factories generally supply more than just access to the coffee market, and Karatu offers additional programs including access to capital for farm reinvestment, and provides members with agronomical inputs. The Karatu site sits at around 1890 meters above sea level, and is strategically situated next to the Rwabura river where it is able to pump clean water for processing coffee. They've dug waste water pits where the water used for processing is directed, and soaks into the soil, instead of running off back into the river. This is one of two lots of Karatu we purchased this year, and an AB selection, which refers to the size of the beans (15/64" to 17/64"). The other Peaberry outturn is scheduled for early 2024.
