Full Cupping Notes

I was struck by the fruit and spice notes that came up from the ground coffee. My City roast had punchy fruits, ripe pineapple, and a very appealing citrus-spice note. The sweetness is so potent in the wet aromatics, and along with tropical fruit hints, brought out a profile of pineapple upside-down cake. Running my spoon through the wet coffee crust at the top of my cup released brighter, more delicate citrus notes that smelled amazing. The cup is bright and juicy, with fruits that hit on floral aspects, and syrupy body to boot. Cupping a City roast, the sweetness showed hints of minimally processed sugars, and the fruits came up right behind them. The hot coffee is brisk, and bright, and while vibrant citrus and tea are what came to mind, it wasn't until the coffee cooled off a little that I started to get a clearer picture of flavors. The cup was very aromatic, with hints of Earl Grey and floral stone fruits adding to that effect. Bright flavors of green grape, orange, and cranberry were also such a delicious part of the flavor profile. While I prefered City roasts, Igutha produces quite an enjoyable cup at Full City too. I wouldn't call it "bittersweet", though the roast tones were certainly there. It's the fruits that I was focused on, dark, and juicy grapes, black plum, still bringing some vibrance to the brew.

This is the AB grade selection from the Igutha wet mill in Nyeri. The wet mill (called a "Factory" in Kenya) operates under the Rugi Farmer's Cooperative Society, an umbrella organization that oversees operations of their associated wet mills, and helps with things like agronomical support to farmers, pre-financing during the harvest season, and marketing the coffees. It's my understanding that Rugi is an older coop, started back in the late 1960's. This is the first year we've tasted there coffee, and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to pick up this stellar AB lot! Igutha currently has around 600 members delivering their coffee cherry to the mill, and farms are typically 1 hectare or less, and at an altitude range of 1700 - 1900 meters. After depulping the coffee, they employ up to 48 hour fermentation time to beak down the sticky fruit mucilage surrounding the seeds. The coffee is then moved to raised drying beds where it will dry for 2-3 weeks. The preferred cultivars are SL-28, and SL-34 bourbon selections, known for good cup quality, especially when growing conditions are favorable. But you also see Batain, Ruiru 11, quite common in Kenya.
