Coffee Shrub

This year's coffee from Luis Otavio has an interesting fruited side amidst a rustic sweetness like coconut palm sugar. Notes of berry, cocoa powder, and aromatic accent of grappa brandy. City to Full City+. Good for espresso.
I get notes of palm sugar and fruit in the dry fragrance, with hints of berry, and some really nice bittersweetness behind it at darker roast levels. The wet aroma has a very interesting fruited side; something that carries over into the cup, too. The steam lets off allusions to wilder fruit notes, that are somewhat winey in smell. At City+, the cup offered notes of rustic sugars and musky fruit notes. Both Tom and I (Dan) noted a very nice acidity level for Brazilian coffee, not too bright, but should be a pleasant surprise to those who think Brazilian coffees fall flat in that category. Moderate sweetness leads to notes of coconut palm sugar, hazelnut, freeze dried berry, and a winey aromatic note of grappa brandy. At darker levels, opaque roast flavors left room for little else, though there were some mild fruit flavors in the finish, like grape skins. My darkest roast, that had a few snaps of 2nd crack in the cooling tray, displayed intense roast flavors, and left behind a lingering flavor of high cocoa solids chocolate.
Coffee farming runs deep in Luis Otavio Turati's family lineage. After his grandfather spent many years working the fields of other people's farms, Luis' father, Jose, set out to plant his own coffee first in Guaxupé. He and his family eventually settled in Serra da Canastra, in South Minas, where they would plant their 120 hectare farm, Novo Horizonte. Drawn to the higher altitudes found in the area (relative to the region - 1100 meters), and proximity to the nearby National Park, the Turati family have worked to improve their picking and processing methods in service of the final cup, with Luis at the quality control help. This lot is made up of Yellow Catuaí cultivar, that was naturally processed by drying the whole coffee cherry on cement patios for upwards of 3 weeks.
