Coffee Shrub

Sweet at its core, with an array of fruit accents, moderate tartaric/citric acidity, and ample body that deepens with roast. Hints of currant, lemon rind, peach, fruit leather, whole spice, and cocoa. City to Full City.
Kangunu Peaberry has a fair amount of fruit in the cup for wet process coffee, even when taking origin into consideration. The flavor profile pulls out dark fruits, which informs the acidic impression too, amidst a backdrop of rindy citrus and mild bittersweet notes. Aromatically speaking, the fruited elements come through more like raisin, dried date, with brown sugar and cinnamon. There's very nice clarity and sweetness in the brew, a dark sugar flavor lays the groundwork in the cup beneath an array of fruited accent notes. City roasts develop impressive level of sweetness that is accented by a flavor profile of peach, dried black currants, tangy lemon rind, and tamarind paste. Aromatic spice notes of whole cloves and mace wraps around from front to finish, adding to a fragrant hint to the sweetness. The acidity level scores highest in City and City+ roasts (no surprise really, it is Kenyan coffee after all!), slightly milder intensity than some of our other Kenya's, with tartaric berry and citric aspects to it. I loved the body and bittersweet notes of my Full City roast, accompanied by accents of fruit leather, and fig jam.
Kangunu Farmers Cooperative Society is located about 140 km North West of Nairobi in Muranga North district of the Central Province. I had bought this coffee in the past, but we haven't seen a lot of Muranga lots in previous years, at least not as many as the Nyeri region coffees. But the Muranga area is a rich agricultural oasis on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. Kangunu is at 1740 meters, endowed with rich volcanic soils that are deep, well drained and have much organic material; perfect for coffee. This was an outstanding coffee the last time we bought it (though several years now) , so we were hoping to find a great Kangunu again for 2021. In blind cupping, we did. This coffee was bought outside the auction, via the direct trade mechanism in Kenya, called oddly the "Second Window" because in fact it allows one to pull a coffee from the auction listings and buy it first! With this, you can negotiate a price with the coop that they are sure is usually better than what the coffee would sell for at the auction.
