This coffee comes from "New Years Gift" Estate, and interesting name for a coffee estate. NYG sits in a valley just outside Chipinge town, first concentrating on Tea cultivation in the early part of the 20th century, and then building out a coffee component of the farm in the 1990's. Processing is very similar to East Africa (Kenya in particular) with disc pulpers, fermentation tanks, washing channels, and raised bed sun-drying of coffees. A lot of work goes into grading the coffee, and NYG has set up a dry mill onsite with Pinhalense machinery to hull and further sort their coffees. This is an AAA grade, which is all the beans 18 screen and above, a mix of SL-28 and Caturra varietals.
This lot from Zimbabwe when on the cupping table, is a case of mistaken identity. Well, not altogether, but from dry fragrance to cup, the profile shares striking resemblance to Latin American coffee. The ground coffee has a strong of toffee and roasted nut smell. The wet aroma is built around a solid brown sugar and walnut smells in light roasts, and a touch of nutmeg and molasses coming off the break at City+. The brewed coffee is very mild at light roasts with a bread-like sweetness. Our personal favorites were in the range of City+ and even beyond. At these roast levels you develop a nice sugar-browning sweetness, medium body, and a very mild malic to tannic acidity. The finish is in the realm of bittering cacao notes, and is on the short side. A nice crowd pleasing, and balanced brew.
