Iyula has a clear, cane sugar sweetness, with fruit to herbal accents, dark cranberry, licorice, and blood orange. Body is oily, and acidity grabby, like orange pulp. City+ to Full City+. Good for espresso.
"Iyula" is the name of the coffee washing station, or "CPU" (coffee processing unit) located in the town of Iyula. Like the Isende coffee we also have listed on our website, Iyula is a Farmer Business Group (FBG), essentially a cooperative effort by smallholder coffee farmers to pool resources, processing and marketing of their crop. In a place like Tanzania, where small holders may only produce a few bags of coffee, FBG's give farmer members the opportunity to combine lots together, which in this case, affords them the resource of processing coffees on big machinery rather than by hand - a tedious task that would be necessary for processing small amounts of coffee. The station sits in the Mbeya highlands, around 1750 meters and coffee is grown up to 2000 meters.
This dry fragrance of this AB outturn from Iyula has a mix of sweet caramel and cocoa, and a subdued cinnamon note. The intensity level is raised when adding hot water, an underlying layer of caramel sweetness proliferating in the steam, along with a raisiny dried fruit smell when breaking through the crust. Our City+ roast boasted white cane sugar sweetness, a bit like hard candy, followed by subtle fruit and herbal accents. The latter are most apparent when the coffee isn't piping hot; tangy citrus rind, dark cranberry, licorice, and blood orange come to mind, albeit in very small doses. Full City roasts have a bittersweet mixture of dark chocolate and toasted grain that brings a Hershey's Crunch bar to mind. Acidity is a bit on the grabby side, like orange pulp, and body is heavy and oily. Espresso shots at Full City are packed with a fruited cocoa flavor, a dark berry-like tartness followed by intense dark cacao bittersweetness.
