Alright, this year we finally got our hands on some really great Tanzania lots! We're excited, as it's been difficult at best to locate quality lots. The weather is not always conducive for producing stable coffee. And even when we do taste something we like, it seems like shipments are invariably delayed at the port in Dar es Salaam - with fluctuating rain, humidity, and heat - resulting in the landed coffee tasting quite different than expected (and not in a positive way!). And with a more predictable coffee area like Kenya nearby, the coffee from Tanzania is often simply overlooked. So when we come across quality as we did with this lot, we feel lucky, and duly so when that quality survives the unpredictable journey mentioned above. This peaberry lot stood out on the cupping table as having sweet fruits, crisp acidity, and a clean finish. This is our favorite of the four lots we picked up, and unfortunately only 3 x 60 KG bags. Being so small, we are only offering in 1 LB increments.
The dry fragrance of City+ roasts are sweet and have a really nice stone fruit smell to them, along with some pungent spices. Adding hot water brings up a milky sweet caramel smell - caramelizing sugar, butter, and heavy cream - with a slight floral scent of loose leaf black tea. Our Full City roast had a nice blackberry smell as well that really showed itself on the break. Cupping a City+ roast, there's an apparent apple flavor, backed by the taste of sweet caramel syrup, and a sort of roasted grain flavor (like barley tea, or something of that nature). The mouthfeel has weight to it - silky, like fruit juicy - and is offset by a delicate floral note. A lingering black tea note is woven through the profile, turning toward tannic mouthfeel in the finish, which provides a nice complexity to the overall cup character. Full City roasts have a bit more fruit juice flavors than light roasts, and sweet caramelizing sugars remain front and center. This is a very unique Tanzanian coffee, and the only downside is that we only were able to procure 3 bags. It cups with a complexity and cleanliness that is not what we commonly taste in coffees from the region. City+ to Full City is a safe roast range that won't compromise complexity and will fully develop sweetness.
