La Esperanza is the name of the village where this coffee comes from. Made up from coffees of several different farmers in La Esperanza, this 45 bag regional blend represents some of the higher scoring coffees from many of the small holders in this region. Altitude averages around 1750 meters and cultivars grown are typically Caturra, with some Typica and Bourbon mixed in. The coffee in La Esperanza comes earlier than some of the higher altitude areas, but due to the cold climate, coffee matures more slowly which lends itself to bean density. This is a fully washed coffee, wet processed by the farmers who then deliver their coffee in dry parchment (the green bean with the thin parchment layer still intact) to a warehouse in Cajamarca where it is graded and purchased. The group who set up this buying operation are working to register all the farmers they buy from in order to help isolate different quality tiers, but also be able to issue the initial payments and any quality premiums themselves, something that was lacking when they were buying through more traditional avenues.

City+ roasts have a smell of malted cocoa powder in the dry fragrance, the chocolatey roast character even more robust when taken a shade darker. Adding hot water raises a scent of honey-bran muffin and dark chocolate in the steam. This La Esperanza coffee is forgiving in the roaster, a lot of sweet caramely and cocoa flavors to be uncovered throughout a broad roast range. I recommend City+ as a starting point though as that's the starting point for a well-developed sweetness. My City+ had impressive, buoyant body and cup flavors are centered around light brown sugar and milk chocolate, with a mild raisin/dried dark fruit finishing note. My Full City roast went much longer than I had hoped for (95 grams, 11 minutes overall roast time, 3.5 min development post 1st crack). But much to my surprise the coffee was really sweet and chocolatey with flavor notes of semi-sweet chocolate chips and brown sugar at the center of the cup profile. This is a mild acid coffee and so there's little risk of a flat cup by drawing out roast time. La Esperanza is a good option for single origin espresso too.
