Kamwangi AA is fruited and clean, with a nice pointed finish. Stone fruit and citrus juice flavors come through, with a refined cane-sugar sweetness. A nice bittering aspect comes through in the finish (like pulpy orange juice or peach skin) with an Earl Grey tea note. City to Full City.

Kamwangi factory is located in the Gichugu division of Kirinyaga district. The factory has the good fortune of being connected to the national electric grid, and washing resources are plentiful with the nearby Nyamindi river as the source. Kamwangi is part of the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS). These factories are basically small washing stations set up in a particular area and are allied with a larger cooperative society - the FCS. Factories have wet mills, washing/fermenting channels, and raised beds where the coffees are basically processed all the way down to dried parchment (being meticulously sorted along the way). Kamwangi has a water recirculation system set up, as well as eight waste water soaking pits to help minimize the environmental impact. Kamwangi farmers grow primarily SL-28, SL-34, and Ruiru 11 cultivars, benefitting from the red volcanic soils of Mt Kenya, and most above 1800 meters. We paid extra to have this coffee packaged into vacuum-sealed bags. They use a nitrogen flush before sucking and sealing, probably the best method for keeping coffees fresh.
Kamawngi AA is sugary-sweet, with clean expressions of fruit juice in the cup. It's a perfumed fragrance of sugar browning smells, and from light to dark, the dry grounds have a permeating scent of fresh orange juice, and hints of tropical fruits. The wet grounds of City roasts smell of citrus and butterscotch chips, so sweet, further elevated by smells of tangerine and candied peel. This AA outturn shows great cleanliness, core bittersweet coffee flavors staying well within bounds. The middle profile pushes stone fruit and citrus notes, giving way to brisk tea in the finish. As the cup cools, top notes of apricot and mandarin orange juice come up, with a bittering aspect that echoes the mouth feel of peach skin or citrus pulp. At City roast level, this coffee has a 'clear' sweetness, like refined cane sugar, which shifts into dark honey as you near Full City. Our dark roast showed so much body, carrying a thick honey flavor, blood orange, and subtle roast tones. Both light and dark roasts show hints of baking spice and Earl Grey tea, adding to the overall complexity. Being an AA, the bean size is pretty large, so I made sure to let first crack completely finish before pulling my City roast in order to ensure the coffee roasted all the way through.
