Pe±a Roja has a confectionary sweetness to it, caramelizing sugars, and sweet stone fruits. A bodied cup, this one carries with it a very sweet finish with slight bittering aspect of peach skin. Acidity is malic, and provides good structure. City+ to Full City+. Single Origin Espresso.
This cooperative mill is located in La Libertad, and handles processing of many small production farmers in the area. While they are cooperatively run, they also allow some of the local small producers to process their coffee cherry at the mill. This lot is a selection of small producer lots in this region processed at Pe±a Roja. We bring this coffee in as part of our Xinabajul project in Huehuetenango. The goal is to gather small producers and give their coffee the credit they deserve - particularly in the price we pay to the farmer. We hope to work with many more families throughout the Huehuetenango region, helping to improve resources when we can and ultimately the value of the coffee they produce. The dry fragrance has a nice malt sugar and clove spice scent, sweet and clean, and with slight dried fruits smells. The wet grounds are rife with caramelized sugar and butter, sweet and slightly floral, with a definite confectionary slant. The break continues this theme with a note of cinnamon and sugar coated pecan. At CIty+ the brewed coffee has creamy body, a nice weighty mouthfeel. Flavors of apricot and peach show well with a clean malic acidity. This is a really lovely coffee, and the sweetness is like caramel candies, and roasted almond note. Caramelized sugar flavors hang on long in the aftertaste accompanied by a slight bittering aspect you find in stone fruit skins. A nice, well-balanced Guatemala, that does well as coffee and single origin espresso.
