City roasts show anchoring undercurrent of light brown sugar sweetness, and intimation of dehydrated banana, a rustic flavor brown rice syrup, and mild yet present orange rind acidity. Full City is more bittersweet. City to Full City.

Poko Ranaka is a fairly small lot of coffee blended from different farms in the village of Tangkul, East Manggarai District. Altitude of these farms varies, from a low point of around 1400 meters above sea level, on up to about 1800 meters. The main cultivars grown in the region are S-795, Typica, and Yellow Caturra. Coffee is processed at home using hand crank depulpers, fermenting the coffee in buckets, and then either drying on racks or in makeshift drying sheds. This lot is part of an effort between ourselves and an intermediary we're working with in the region to identify, separate, and evaluate coffees from farms in the higher elevation coffee zones. This area of Tangkul is near the volcano Ranaka, which is where this small producer blend gets it's name. The area is rife with nutrient rich soils, and coffee farmers are able to grow using fully organic farm practices, though they are not certified at this time.
Poco Ranaka's aroma showcases brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and hints of baked yam and fresh cut wood. This Flores lot cooks up something sweet at a wide range of roasts, and has fairly clean cup character considering the origin. City+ roasts have a, solid undercurrent of unrefined sugary sweetness that does well to anchor the cup, and intimations of fresh tarragon leaf, roasted barley, and tobacco. It has a touch more acidity than we expect from Flores, the brightness coming off like red apple, and an aromatic cedar characteristic accents the finish. Full City has some smokey cocoa roast tones with a bitterness that challenges the brown sugar sweet side, but the two are still fairly balanced. This Flores will work well as espresso on it's own, but I think functions best as one part of an espresso blend component. I might try a simple 2-bean blend with 2/3 Flores, and 1/3 washed Ethiopia to bring about fruited tones and vibrant acidity.
