This Yirga Cheffe lot comes from a washing station in the Kochore region, a smaller sub-region Korie. We purchased this lot directly from the station manager, who has a small handful of private washing stations in the Kochore and Chele'lektu sub-regions. Private and cooperative stations abound, and as one of the official designations of the Ethiopia Coffee Exchange, many coffees can be sold as Kochore/Kochere. We've visited a few of his washing stations in the past couple years, and were impressed at the prices they are paying for KG of coffee cherry - much higher than most other zones, more-than double in some cases. 650 farmers deliver tho this particular station. The high price paid up front upon delivery is very attractive to the locals, affording access to much of the sought after coffees in the highest elevations, most members in the 1900 - 2000 meters range. We were happy to secure a small amount of this coffee, 2400 LBS, and a new addition to our Ethiopia roster.
Gutiti has a nice floral and developed sugar fragrance, a dark sugar sweetness to this Yirga Cheffe. The ground coffee has maple candy and creme br_l©e crust, with wild flowers lingering overhead. The wetted grounds smell of raw honey and honeysuckle, with a developed raw sugar and raisin smell coming up off the break. As a brewed coffee, this one shows amazing at City+ to Full City roast levels. Brown sugar and cinnamon spice, clover honey, raisin and date, a really nice cup profile. As it cools, rose hips and essence of orange start to come up in the profile, and a lemonade-like acidity shining bright. There's a nice jasmine note too that holds on in the finish, along with a flavor of herb tea. Roasting to Full City tones down acidity and florals a bit, but without removing altogether. It remains quite complex, and body is bumped up a notch or two as well. These darker roasts also give off a flavor of high % baker's cocoa in the finish. A "Yirga Cheffe" all the way, Gutiti rivals the beauty of the washed Yirgs we've already posted this year in every way.
