Ethiopia Kercha Arusi Station

Light roasts are where a floral payoff is tasted, top notes of stargazer lily and pearl jasmine tea compliment convincing raw cane sugar sweetness, and red berry accents the finish. City to City+.

Arusi is the name of Kebele where this privately owned coffee processing site is located within the Kercha Woreda of the Guji Zone. The coffee from Guji is often though to have a particular flavor profile, floral is definitely part of the equation, but also with complex tea notes. This coffee certainly matches that descritption. Arusi is not a site we've been to, but we have visited several other coffee processing stations owned by this same group in Kercha (see Sare Saba). Kercha has incredibly high altitude peaks, and the farmers they are buying cherry from have coffee planted as high as 2200 meters above sea level and growing heirloom cultivar types.

Yes this arrived in late 2018, and no you should not be afraid to roast this one light, as that's where the big floral payoff is tasted. This is one of those jasmine flower adorned Guji coffees, with "light and bright" character if you will. Light roasting highlights perfumed flowery accents in the aroma amidst a moderate level of raw sugar sweetness. The level of sweetness in the cup is developed as well, and has flavor aspects of sugar cane juice, the finish hinting at red berry. And while all of this is true, it's the floral characteristics like star gazer lily and pearl jasmine tea that make Arusi really stand out. Acidity is moderate and like citrus-spritzed water. One of my roasts was Full City which proved to be too dark for this coffee and had deleterious effects on Arusi's complex top notes.
