At a time when new crop Ethiopia coffee is non-existent, Cheleba offers a rock-solid natural Yirga Cheffe cup - bold berry notes, cooked fruits, tenadam herb, and even decent acidity to tie it all together. Darker roasts build a dark cocoa 'heft' in the finish. City+ to Full City+.
Cheleba is a private washing station in close proximity to Yirga Cheffe town, in the Gedeo Zone. The mill is operated by a local family who live in town, and while we've picked up washed lots from them as well, they tend to focus on producing dry-processed coffee - and they do it very well. Over 700 small-holder farmers deliver cherry to Cheleba, where it is hand sorted multiple times during the mill process, pulling out any over or under rip coffee. They separate batches by delivery day, and this is a blend of a few different top scoring days. It's a later arrival from 2014, and cupping very strong. With new harvest coffee still a couple months away, a source of good Ethiopia coffees is drying up. We're happy to have this last natural processed lot to offer in the interim.
Cheleba has strong fruited notes in the dry grouds, City+ roasts loaded with red fruit punch and berry jam smells. There's a drinking cocoa smell too, a welcome bittersweetness to the fruit-forward fragrance. Adding hot water brings up a stewed dark fruit smell, like plum and sugars, and a nice strawberry smell when breaking the crust. This coffee cups nicely at City+, with a slight acidity tying together mixed berry and tropical fruit juice flavors. There's a tenadam note, an herb often added to coffee in Ethiopia, adding a nice complexity to the cup. Full City roasts show a nice date sugar sweetness, pungent and sweet, and along with a nice Dutch drinking cocoa note in the finish, adds 'heft' to the cup. A nice dry process Ethiopia at a time when new crop is non-existent.
