This is a bright, lively cup, not overly complex, but very refreshing, lighter-bodied with a viscous mouthfeel across the roast spectrum. Also has a cane sugar sweetness, with raw cocoa in the finish. City+ is ideal, but it works well up to Full City+.
This is a separated lot from a single producer at the Helsar de Zarcero micromill. I had noticed this coffee when cupping in Costa Rica for its clean, classic West Valley character. I remember La Minita in it's best years tasting like this. It is from the farm of the Manuel "Macho" Arce family, one of the contributors to the Helsar lot we sold earlier in the season, but offered here as it's own discrete microlot. This coffee deserves it's own spotlight. Manuel Arce goes by the name "Macho": In Latin America, it is a nickname given to children with blonde hair. It's not indicative of the same connotation here in the US. The vast majority of this finca is planted in Caturra cultivar, though I have seen small amounts of other types when walking the farm.
The dry fragrance has honey graham cracker, powdered cocoa and toasted almond, with traces of peach. The wet aroma is much sweeter, with red honey and peach-cherry pie notes. Like all coffees the cup character depends on the roast level, and here I find lighter roasts to be the most dynamic. Peach tea notes, accented with a twist of lemon define the City roast cup. There is a cane sugar sweetness, with raw cocoa in the finish. At more developed roast levels, darker fruit tones emerge, with toasted hazelnut roast tones. The light roast has vanilla and very slight refined sugar sweetness: Darker roasts have caramel and vanilla. The aftertaste is fairly brief, with suggestions of baker's cocoa emerging. It's a bright, lively cup, not overly complex, but very refreshing, if a hot beverage can be characterized as such. It's lighter-bodied but has a nice viscous mouthfeel across the roast spectrum. I preferred the City+ roast level overall.
