This Planadas Organic is very fruit-forward, lush flavors of apple and berry, ripe tropicals, blackberry, and stone fruits. Sweetness prevails in the cup propping up fruited characteristics nicely. City to Full City.
We've bought many prized Colombian coffees from Tolima, but due in part to remote access as well as it being one of the last FARC holdouts, have had difficulty building consistent relationships. This coffee is from a local association in the Montalvo village in Planadas, who offer both Organic and Fair Trade certification. The 55 families in the village can sell their parchment coffee at a central collection station in town that is fully outfitted with a roasting and tasting coffee "lab". This lot is a 45 bag blend of the coffees from the small-holder farm members.
The dry fragrance has a nice mix of spice and sugar smells, like baked muffins with dried fruit and coffee cake. A nice prevalent sweetness continues into the wet aromatics, a matrix of sugar-browning smells, fresh caramel, baked sugar. The break reveals slight fruit smells and recalls some of elements of "baked goods" sensed up front. Lush fruit flavors are much more prevalent in the cup, apple, red berry, and nectarine at City+, and Full City showing a distinct blackberry and tropical notes. And as this coffee cools, the list multiplies and a mild-to-moderate acidity is ushered in. Sweet and bitter notes mesh well across the roast spectrum, and the underlying raw sugar sweetness supports the fruit-forward nature of the cup well.
