Productores Peque±os is a blend of coffees from small producers in the La Plata Municipality of Huila, Colombia. La Plata lies in the foothills of the Cordillera Central mountain range, the farms in this group spanning a range of 1800 meters to 2000 meters above sea level. The average farm size is about 2 hectares with less than 10,000 trees planted, Caturra being the dominant cultivar grown, with some Variedad Colombia, and Typica mixed in. This is our second round of coffees from this particular farmer group, a cooperative of sorts made up of about 25 families and growing. Farmers deliver their coffee to a central location in La Plata, where it is kept separate by processing batch. We taste samples of these process batches that represent anywhere from 30kg to several bags of coffee, and then decide which lots to blend together. Often, the bag amounts are on the small side and so it makes sense to blend a few together by cup profile so as to have a larger amount of coffee to offer to our customers. Productores Peque±os is made up of 12 different producers in all, equaling a total of 28 bags. The price paid for this coffee is extremely competitive for the region. This season the intermediary we work with in Medell_n are helping to finance the buying so that farmers are paid an initial price up front when the coffee is delivered, and then a second payment once quality tier is determined.
Productores Peque±os is a versatile coffee, our City to Full City roasts making for extremely sweet and juicy brewed coffee, and Full City to Full City+ producing big cocoa and fruit tones in espresso extraction. At City roast level, the ground coffee has a perfumed scent of dark fruit and panela sugar, a sugar we pick up when on our visits to Colombia, made by pressing freshly cut sugar cane and reducing the juice in a large pot over a fire. It's incredibly sweet and has a retronasal/floral aspect to it that is unlike any other sugar I've tasted. This coffee's aroma shares much in common with panela too, and breaking through the crust brings up distinct fruit tones of cooked berry sauce, guayaba candy, and in our Full City roast, plum chews. The cup at City roast level has a wine grape aroma, with a flavor of sugar in the raw and cane juice, along with top notes of orange spice tea, and boysenberry. Our Full City roast had increadible sweetness as well, fruit flavors elevated as you move through the cup, with apricot jelly, dark grape, and peach Snapple. Productores Peque±os has impressive level of acidity too (especially on the lighter end of the roast spectrum), even on the refreshing side, like grape juice.
