Here for you is another microlot offer from the south Colombian region of Pedregal. This particular offer only 7 bags and comes to us from Jose Amir Medina, a farmer who produce a very small amount of coffee each season. In an area where many farmers produce only 1 and 2 bag lots, anything more almost seems infinite! But that's one of the reasons why this area is so special. So many small farmers in the hillsides surrounding the town of Pedregal produce small and amazing lots. One option is to bulk these together and sell them as a regional blend - which we do with much of the lots we select from this area (San Jose, Agua Blanca, Palmera etc). But now and again, we come across coffees that we feel need to be showcased and set aside from the larger blends. Such is the case for this coffee. Like many neighboring farms, processing the coffee is simple and efficient. A hand depulper is implemented to remove the coffee cherry, and then the coffee is fermented and washed in the same tank. After, parchment is laid out to dry on raised parabolic beds, in order to allow air flow to aid in the drying process. With regular rains in Colombia, the beds are kept under plastic covers, or often in small house-like structures, to keep the coffee from getting wet. Like the other lots we've listed from this area, this coffee is a testament to the repeated quality that comes from optimal cherry picking and simple but clean processing.
Cupping these microlots from Pedregal is such a treat. They have a solid sweetness and more than likely boast sugar and fruit complexity equally. This lot from Jose Amir Medina is no exception, and is immediately expressed in the dry grounds. There is a strong smell of black cherry, along with caramel and nougat. I also catch a note of vanilla and cream, that alludes to cream soda. A scent of baked peach with brown sugar comes up off the wet grounds, and is rounded out by notes of caramel and freshly ground cinnamon. Breaking through the crust gives off a more than pleasing waft of butter pecan ice cream. The cup is heavily fruited with stone fruits such as peach and apricot. There are also notes of tamarind and cola. It's juicy and tastes fresh, and the mouthfeel is heavy like nectar. The finish of this coffee goes to green grape and ruby red grapefruit juice, and the sweetness hangs around long after the drink. This is a coffee that does very well in the City to Full City roast range, which allows the full potential of cup complexity. Full City roasts will make an exceptional espresso as well.
