Finca Villa Rica, is a single-producer coffee from the Vereda San Isidro within the greater department of Inza de Cauca. Coffee production in this region is very traditional, in the sense that they mostly are still using hand-crank pulpers, overnight fermentation, and then drying on raised beds. The latter are normally covered to protect from the elements - with venting to facilitate good airflow - and oftentimes are conveniently built on top of the house. We cupped a few coffees from this region while they were still quite fresh, and this particular microlot now landed, is showing quite an unexpected balanced cup. Unexpected in that the offer sample showed a bit of edgy fruit, and we weren't sure which way the coffee would go. This is a testament to the affects rest ("reposado") can have on a coffee, and while we took a bit of a risk on this coffee, helps us to better identify 'quality' in super freshly harvested coffees (which can be quite tricky). All in all, this turned out to be at the top tier of this new batch of Colombia coffees.
Finca Villa Rica cups with exceptional cleanliness and structuring brightness in the cup. The dry fragrance has an up-front fruited quality, with thick, honeyed sweetness, and a slight floral aspect (more like sugar, than actual flowers). The wet grounds build a nougat-like scent - like torrone - very sweet, and with golden raisin and dried fig. The cup is very sweet when hot, and flavors of caramel and cocoa build out the profile, with fruit juice brightness tying it together. As the cup cools, fruit flavors liven up the cup - grape (especially the tartaric aspect), apple, and even a bit of pineapple - staying well within the boundaries of "balance", without being anywhere near over-the-top. The sweetness of this coffee remains dense all the way through - a mix of caramel and pectin sugars - and the finish has a bittersweetness of sweetened, fine Dutch cocoa. This coffee's acidity is full of life, a refreshing malic to tartaric appeal. We brewed a City+ roast with 72 hours rest and the cup is very "complete", near competition level Colombia.
