This single producer lot comes from the farm of Nilson Lopez, and is one of several producers who have banded together in the last year and started a small growers association in the Beusaco region of Nari_o. They were part of another association in the area who's ownership was turned over to a group far outside the region, and in an effort to keep trade and transparency local, a few farmers have pooled resources in order to set up a small milling operation at a warehouse in town. Their numbers are growing, and the quality we tasted some truly impressive coffees when cupping at their warehouse last Jul. This particular lot from Nilson is honey processed, meaning the coffee cherry and only some of the fruit are removed with mechanical demucilagers, and then laid directly to dry in parabolicos with some of the fruit intact. This type of processing tends to impart fruited flavors and tone down acidity, which in Nilson's case, the former seems to be true, but not the latter. Lighter roasting will definitely produce bright cups, as well as an abundance of clean fruited accents. These farms are in the 2000+ meters above sea level range, and are mostly planted in Caturra and Variedad Colombia (F6 and F4).
City+ proves to be a real sweet spot for this coffee, the dry fragrance marked by cherry fruited smells, along with brown sugar and buttery caramels. The fruited aspects seem to unfold when adding hot water, a smell of cherry pie with melted butter on top, ripe berry with honey, and a baked apple note is released off the break. The aromatic descriptors accurately depict the cup profile too, apple and cherry notes found in the brewed coffee are articulate and clean, not winey at all. A sweet caramely flavor builds as the coffee cools down in temperature, and is accompanied by heavy handed hints of tamarind and cherry chews, as well as a note of fresh cantaloupe. Acidity is bright for a honey too, and reminds me of a slice of Fuji apple. Full City moves fruited notes toward a darker hue - plum and fig come to mind - as well as build body weight, and an undercurrent of semi-sweet chocolate, and roast tones that define the finish.
