This is a blend made up from the coffees of roughly a dozen small producers just outside Buesaco town, in Colombia's Nariño Department. We put this blend together after cupping a high volume of samples at the coffee alliance in Buesaco they belong to. Our goal was to separate out any coffees that scored 86 points and above, which at a minimum insures the producer a premium that's 50% higher than the association's going rate (in this case of coffees we score micro-lot, the producer is paid a little more than twice the going rate at the coop). The local coffee association is a new venture started by two brothers who stepped out on their own to offer a more direct and transparent option than some of the local competitors. Association membership is growing, and we tasted some truly impressive coffees when cupping at their warehouse on our last visit. Farms are typically planted in Caturra and Variedad Colombia (F4 and F6 types), grown at altitudes between 1700 and 2100 meters above sea level.

At City roast level the dry fragrance is laced with fruited accents, tropical, dehydrated fruit, fruit tea, and a persistent panela sugar smell underneath. I picked up on a sweet raspberry smell in the wet aroma, as well as a caramel sugar scent like toffee crisp. Brewing lighter City and City+ roasts, an up front caramelizing sugar sweetness leads into fruited notes such as green apple, blackberry, and dried apricot. The fruited profile has a wine-like characteristic that some might find to be a deal breaker, but not me. To my taste, the complex fruit that comes through in the cup are grounded by immense sweetness, body, and moderate, structuring acidity. Full City adds in a ribbon of bittering chocolate roast tone, that while it's particularly dominant when the coffee is hot, leaves plenty of room for caramelized sugar sweetness to construct a balanced bittersweet undertone, and not to mention a juicy blueberry note to flourish. Full City roasts are delicious as espresso, and packs dark chocolate syrup and dark berry notes into a bittersweet shot with a complex spiced finish.
