Alta Vista Farm lies in the foothills of Serra da Mantiqueira, in the Carmo de Minas municipality. This area is known for coffee cultivation, with relatively good altitude for Brazil, and favorable micro climates for both growing and drying coffee. Alta Vista is 84 hectare farm that was started less than a decade ago, and taking 7th position at Brazil Cup of Excellence competition in 2007, just 3 years after being planted. This is an all Yellow Bourbon separation, a cultivar thought to have higher sugar brick count than the red variety, and this coffee definitely has a persistent sweetness to show. Pulp Natural coffees are often a bit easier to judge roast development, as they don't produce as much chaff, and have had most of the thin layer of fruit removed making for a more even physical coloring as you hit City roast. They also tend to have some acidity, whereas dry processing does much to mute this characteristic. We found City+ to be the ideal starting point for Alta Vista, which is where a balancing level of sweet and bittering roast tones are achieved.

The coffee from Alta Vista Farm presents a nice culmination of roasted nut and cocoa bittering aspects, the cup profile showing the most balance around City+ roast level. This is where nuanced roast tones are complimented by burned caramel hints, hazelnut and pecan flavors are folded in nicely. The cup has a nice simple sweetness, touching on essence of the burned caramel characteristics that were sensed in the aroma. As it cools, the focal point remains centered around a nut and bittersweet chocolate core, our flavor descriptors winding up on chocolate-covered peanut and pecan cookie. But there's also a somewhat muddled fruited flavor in the background that hints at cherry. Alta Vista is a full-bodied coffee that shows best in the middle roast range, also filling the need for a chocolate/nut toned espresso.
