Colombia San Antonio -Jumiliano

Farm Description

We were very impressed when tasting Jumiliano's coffee during our November trip to La Plata, but disappointed to find that his farm was too far outside our planned route to visit. He's in the neighboring department of Cauca, and while just south of our planned trips to towns in both La Plata, Huila and Inzá, Cauca, the mountain roads are pretty rough, and the rather short distance would've tacked on more hours than we could manage. There's always next time. Jumiliano delivers his coffee to the La Plata association we've recently started buying coffee from, focusing on the coffees of around 30 families in the immediate vicinity. Jumiliano falls outside this group, but he like many others, heard about this newly formed group and was attracted by the competitive parchment price being paid for their top lots. The number of farmers the association is buying from has grown over the course of this first year, a growth we hope continues. This lot is a mix Caturra with a little Varieded Colombia. Cupping Notes

We were struck by the cleanliness found in Jumiliano's coffee, a brew promising diverse sugar, fruit, and even floral notes, with a finish that comes to a point before disappearing altogether (but thankfully not too fast!). The smells are so sweet, honey and raw cane juice in City and City+ roasts, with white grape juice and baking spices to a much lesser degree. Pouring hot water ushers in a candy-like sweetness, cinnamon cream caramels, and vanilla chews come to mind, with a fresh floral note highlighting the break. The cup has a dense raw honey sweetness underneath, building intensity as the cup temperature dips. This showy sweetness has me totally hooked, and is followed by flavors I liken to a nougat-like confection "Torrone" - creamy nougat made from honey and white sugar, slivered almonds, lemon zest, and wafers. We found notes of golden raisin and lemon-infused chocolate bar in our City+ and Full City roasts, and big, silky body to boost. Judging from the high levels of sweetness and body, I anticipate this to function beautifully as espresso, though I did not try myself.
