Farm Description

This is our second microlot from the La Plata Municipality of Huila, Colombia, made up of a small group of families who have branched out on their own on a quality-focused effort. 25 families in total, the goal is to play a more direct role in the selection process and sale of their coffees. La Plata lies in the foothills of the Cordillera Central mountain range, the farms in this group spanning a range of 1800 meters to 2000 meters above sea level. The average farm size is about 2 hectares with less than 10,000 trees planted, Caturra being the dominant cultivar grown, with some Variedad Colombia, and Castillo mixed in. Initial samples from this group have been very promising, some like this one, cupping amazing. We've purchased about 30 bags total this past harvest from a few of the producers, and hope to see more from this group during the middle harvest. The price paid for this coffee is extremely competitive for the region. This season, the intermediary we work with in Medellín are helping to finance the buying so that farmers are paid an initial premium up front when the coffee is delivered, and then a second payment once quality tier is determined. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Belen, San Sebastian; these are some of the sub Municipalities where members are from, and why we use the name "Los Santos" referring to their religious derivation. We sold our first 4 bag lot in total on CoffeeShrub (in a matter of hours!), and this 13 bag lot is being split between Shrub and our sister site, Sweet Marias.

Cupping Notes

The dry fragrance has potent sweetness, and is lined with intense fruit smells. Raw honey smells are near floral, and cardamom-spiced fruit punch are released from the ground coffee, apparent from across the room! The wetted crust of course echoes this complexity, more honey smells, but like baked honey cookies, floral aromatics on the break, along with a smell of berry pie filling. A pectin sweetness is found in the cup too - cherry pie filling, blackberry juice - with a resonant cardamom spice accent. and well integrated brightness that cuts through. A rindy orange juice flavor comes up as the temp dips, circling back to the "fruit punch" aspect sensed in aroma. The cup flavors seem to settle on your tongue in layers, and Tom likened the profile to a the layers of chocolate-fruit pastry: vanilla custard, amaretto, cocoa powder, and a ribbon of raspberry filling. The flavors are crisp, defined, and culminate in an extremely clean finish. Acidity too is articulate, translating as a structured cup, and enlivening the overall flavor profile. We again fawned over both our City and City+ roasts, and I imagine espresso shots to be otherworldly as well!
