Burundi Mutambu Rubanda

Burundi Mutambu Rubanda

Farm Description

This coffee is from the Rubanda washing station located in the Mutambu area of Bujumbura Province. There's 444 contributing producers located in the hillsides around the station, small-holder farms, many are much less than 1 hectare of cultivated land adjacent to their homes (roughly 300 hectares of coffee). Coffee cherry is hand-picked, then delivered to the station where it is fully washed, fermented, and then dried on raised beds. Hand sorting is a major factor of quality control, starting with the freshly picked cherry, and ending at the dry mill. Growing altitudes range from about 1400 to 1900 meters at the highest peaks. Like most of the region, Bourbon is the dominant varietal grown.

Cupping Notes

This Burundi has a smell of red raisin and spice, like raisin muffin, and with a unrefined, raw cane juice scent. The dry fragrance is powerful, spiced and sweet. The wetted crust smells a lot like a creme brulee crust, a sort of burned sugar and cream smell. It has a pleasant pungency, like when caramelizing sugar, and plays off notes of floral tea and vanilla wafer. The cup flavor at City roast has a tart lemon note, not puckering, but brisk and resonant. A grounding sweetness of fresh cane juice is amplified as the coffee cools and followed by notes of orange and tangerine. City+ roasts have a nice graham cracker flavor, honeyed and sweet, and citrus juice and pulp notes carries over into the finish. It's an articulate Rwanda coffee, with a palette cleansing finish like black teas.
