Burundi Kirimiro Teka SWP Decaf

Burundi Kirimiro Teka SWP Decaf

Farm Description

This is another custom decaf coffee we sent from our own stocks to Swiss Water in Vancouver. The coffee is Teka, which is located in a unique region far from where Kayanza and Ngozi lots are coming from. It is not far from Gitega, and has good access to roads with a relatively short trip from Teka to Bujumbura. Teka is situated at a dizzying 1938 meters, and is the highest elevation washing station in Burundi. Teka has access to very clean water due to their altitude and their proximity to a forest preserve, which aids in their traditional Burundi style double fermented coffee processing. In a survey of all the cooperatives, Teka was ranked as one of the top 5 stations in Burundi based on Coop management, ecology and coffee quality. We're very happy with how this coffee decaffeinated, retaining much of the cup profile that caused the non-decaf version to stand out on the cupping table in the first place.

Cupping Notes

The dry fragrance has the scent of almond bark (dark chocolate with toasted almonds), as well as dark caramel and a hint of stone fruit. Darker roasts have the nice bittersweet pungency of baker's chocolate. The wet aroma has similar dark chocolate tones, showing hazelnuts and light caramel in the lighter roast, and an intense fudge brownie scent with mild baking spices at Full City level. This coffee has fairly sweet aromatics, which transfer nicely to the cup, where it counts. The lighter roasts have a weighty but silky mouthfeel. The acidity is bracing and gives structure to the cup. There is some dark concord grape and grape skin notes, with caramel and some apple butter sweetness, replete with baking spices. The Full City roast is very sweet as well, expressing the dark caramelized sugars and emerging cinnamon-clove notes you'd expect from this particular Burundi lot. This is a sweet cup of decaf coffee and also ideal for either a decaf single origin espresso or addition to a decaf blend.
